Hello PNW Tennis Officials!

We are excited to announce there is a new roving workshop available to sign up for now in the official’s hub. This is a great way to network with other officials, review techniques, and maybe pick up a new technique or two. This is excellent for newer officials or anyone that has not attended a roving clinic within last 3 years to fulfill your Tennis Knowledge CLC for recertification as a roving official.

Because the Clinic is after the October 31 cutoff for 2026 recertification, the CLC credit will apply to the 2027 recertification. New Officials who were first certified this year are automatically certified for 2026, so this clinic will be especially useful for their first recertification in 2027.

There is still one spot available for the Chair Official Workshop this coming weekend in Tacoma, WA. Please let me know if you would like to sign up or if you have the contact info of someone who might be interested in signing up. Just remember, the person:

  • Must be USTA Certified
  • Must have completed the Chair Umpire Level 1 & 2 online courses

It would be nice to be able to get someone in there who has not yet taken the class, but barring that, it would still be better to fill the class, even with someone who has already taken the class, than not.

2025 PNWTOA Board of Directors Election

Each year the PNWTOA membership elects 3 Directors to 3-year terms to replace those Directors whose terms are expiring. The term of office for all candidates in this election is 2025-2028.

Voting began on May 5th, 2025 and ended at 11:59pm PDT May 26th, 2025. There were 3 candidates for 3 open seats: Barbara Anderson (incumbent), Garrett Mau and Hardik Dalal.

The deadline to Vote was: May 26, 2025

Of 60 eligible voters, 38 cast ballots for 63% voter participation. The three nominated candidates were elected to 3 year terms beginning July 1, 2025 and ending June 30, 2028. There was one write-in vote.

Chair Workshop in Tacoma – 06-07-2025

PNW Tennis Officials,

We have confirmation that there will be an in-person Chair Workshop on Saturday, June 7th, 2025 in Tacoma, Washington.

The “clinic”, as some call it, will be held at the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club (502 N Borough Rd, Tacoma, WA 98403) from 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM PDT.

Please go to this interest form if you are interested in attending, or send the link to others who need or will need this workshop to complete their certification. I have access to the interest form responses so I will be able to follow up and direct people to register. The sign-up page for the workshop is here.

If you have
already attended a chair workshop but you would like to attend another, you will need to contact the USTA at officiating@usta.com to register.

So far, we only have one trainer scheduled to come out, but if we get over 6 participants, we will request a second one.

Some other things to relay would be the following:

  • Lunch will be provided and paid for by the USTA
  • Within 24-48 hours, 2 Tennis Knowledge Credits will be added to the transcripts of participants who attended the workshop for the first time.

Hi all –

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend last night’s annual PNWTOA member meeting. We covered a lot of ground in terms of the state of tennis officiating in the PNW and how the TOA operates. A recording of the meeting is available here for anyone who missed it.

We have extended the nomination period (including self-nominations!) for new Board of Directors Candidates to end of day next Tuesday, April 14th.

Board service involves attending a monthly Zoom meeting and serving on committees in areas that inerest you, such as Recruitment, Awards, or Communications. It’s a great way to build relationships with fellow officials and understand more about the greater PNW tennis community.

If you would like to nominate a fellow member or yourself, simply reply to this email and we’ll explain what’s needed to put the candidate on this year’s ballot. We need at least two new board members, so this year is a great time to get started!

Important Contract Update: In 2025 USTA/PNW declined to accommodate PNWTOA’s contract requirement for an increase of our basic hourly rate to $25/hour. Therefore, we do not have an umbrella contract with USTA/PNW for their hosted and directed events as we have in previous years. However, we have maintained this $25/hour rate in our updated Schedule of Minimums ( https://pnwtennisofficials.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2025-pnwtoa-minimum-fee-schedule.pdf ), and we are pleased to say that so far USTA/PNW is honoring this rate as our assignors staff their events on a one-off basis this year.

Portland Roving Workshop
I’m reaching out with a timely notification that an In-Person Roving Workshop will be held soon, Saturday, November 23, at the University of Portland. The deadline to enroll is only four days away: Friday, November 15th at 11:59pm PT.

Only those who have never attended a Roving Workshop may receive credit. This is a great opportunity for anyone in that category, especially newer officials. Among the benefits:

  •  Invaluable instruction and feedback from a USTA National Trainer
  •  Fulfills your entire 2024-2025 2.0 Tennis Knowledge CLC requirement
  •  Required to achieve a Tier 1 Roving certification
  •  Prerequisite to attend a USTA National Roving Center of Excellence (COE)

2024 PNWTOA Election Results

Hello PNWTOA Members,

Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s election, both as candidates and voters. The board postponed its May meeting by a week to extend voting, so as those who had not yet cast a ballot know from the reminder, voting closed last Tuesday, May 7th, Once again we had a terrific turnout with 60% of eligible voters casting ballots.

Congratulations to our returning incumbent board member, Holly Weyhrauch, and our two new incoming board members, Grace Abraldes and Robin Okubo. Their 3-year term will commence on July 1st, 2024.

We also must take this opportunity to again thank departing board members Denise Alexander and Barb Silvey for their tremendous contributions to the PNWTOA for so many years!

In addition, the proposed amendment to the PNWTOA bylaws passed overwhelmingly, meaning that going forward board members will be limited to 3 consecutive 3-year terms (9 consecutive years maximum). Here are those results:
