Subject: February Update: News & Reminders

Hello Current & Prospective PNWTOA Members,

Hope all of you have had a happy and healthy start to 2023 and those of you working ITA matches have had a great start to the season.

Thank you to all existing members for the timely remittance of this year’s dues – we’re happy to report that all active members are current.

Please join us in congratulating Mick Horton, who has been appointed to fill our vacant Board seat, which is one of three that will be part of this year’s election. We are grateful to Mick for joining us near the end of this seat’s term to contribute his considerable skills and experience for the TOA’s benefit.

Here is a roundup of some timely deadlines and information that we’ve all received recently:

— USTA Chair Umpire Center of Excellence May 3-8 Plantation, FL – 2/5/23 deadline to apply. For anyone looking to take their chair skills to the next level in a challenging environment with elite National trainers, this is the best opportunity available. Apply through your USTA Officiating Learning Center Account at http://lrc.learn.taleo.net/ustaofficiating
— ITA Seattle Town Hall – University of Washington, 2/9/23 – ITA National referees and trainers Anthony Montero and Andrew Rogers will present and do a Q&A about the latest ITA rule applications and best practices in advance of the ITA Division 1 Women’s Team Indoor. This is an excellent (and rare) opportunity to discuss all things ITA chairs and roving with two of the best in college tennis. Register to attend at: https://forms.gle/fArSwn6cUJvSh8vR9
— USTA Mentoring Program – We are thrilled that over 1/3 of our membership is participating in this program, which pairs mentors and mentees from all over the country. That said, just like the national program, there are more registered mentees than mentors, so if you are interested in becoming a mentor in any discipline, simply reply to this message or sign up here.
— USTA Continual Learning Webinar Series: As the USTA continues to evolve its training and certification processes, they are offering new interactive webinars that include Q&As. The new series begins this month, on 2/22/23, with two more in March. Those certified in OfficialsFirst should have received an email detailing the curricula. RSVP here, or watch them (and all archived webinars) later here.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reply to this email with any comments, questions, or suggestions on the above or any other topics. We look forward to seeing everyone soon on court!

Thank you,

Award Nominations, Election Results, Sam Sambrano

Subject: TOA Update: Award Nominations, Election Results, Sam Sambrano
To: PNW Tennis Officials <pnwtennisofficials@gmail.com>

PNWTOA Members,

Hope you are all enjoying a great start to the summer. Here are some updates for you all as we head into a busy time of year:

Award Nominations: This year, we are asking the entire membership to nominate deserving fellow officials for all the awards with which we’re involved:
Perry Hines Official of the Year – Perry Hines was a beloved PNW Official who was a friend, a mentor, and an icon to tennis officials throughout the USA. His namesake award is the PNWTOA’s annual recognition of a member who has demonstrated general excellence in officiating.
Mike Robb Rookie of the Year – This is the PNWTOA’s annual award to recognize a newly certified official for outstanding performance in the first stage of an officiating career.
Nicholas E. Powell Award – Presented annually by the USTA at the National level, the Nicholas E. Powell Award recognizes an outstanding USTA official certified no higher than the USTA level whose career body of work has been primarily at the community level. The winner is selected from among a group of Sectional nominees.

Please submit your nominations for any of the three above awards by replying to this email. THE DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS IS MONDAY, JULY 11TH. For the Perry Hines or Mike Robb awards, please consider nominees from the 2020-2021 work period, as last year the PNWTOA did not give awards based on 2020 performance due to COVID. Based on your nominations, The PNWTOA Board will select candidates for the Perry Hines and Mike Robb awards at our next meeting on July 13th, and the membership will vote for the winners over the following month. Also at the July 13th meeting, based on your nominations, the Board will select the 2022 PNW nominee for the Nicholas E. Powell Award.

Election Results: Our annual election closed on 5/2/22 – three open Director seats were filled by incumbent candidates and an amendment to our bylaws was passed unanimously. Please view the complete returns below, and thank you to all who voted!

Sam Sambrano: Finally and most importantly, our longtime dear colleague and friend Sam Sambrano was recently in a serious auto accident and is facing a long recovery. If you are able, please join the PNWTOA in sending messages of love and support to:

Richard Sammy Sambrano
Avamere
630 S. Pearl
Tacoma, WA 98465

Take good care of yourselves and enjoy your time on court. As always, feel free to reach out to the Board with ideas, questions, or concerns at pnwtennisofficials@gmail.com.

Thank you,
Scott Pennington, President

PNWTOA – Update & 2022 Dues

From: PNW Tennis Officials <pnwtennisofficials>
Date: Fri, Dec 3, 2021 at 7:30 PM
Subject: PNWTOA – Update & 2022 Dues

December 3, 2021

Dear PNWTOA Current & Prospective Members,

Happy Holidays and congratulations on persevering through what has been, while hopefully a more normal and rewarding year than 2020, no less of a challenge as most of us have returned to officiating in this COVID era.

In recognition of our evolving landscape, the Board of Directors undertook a review of compensation for officials in our section, and we have instituted a schedule of minimum fees for 2022 from which our assignors will negotiate pay rates with any and all events, regardless of host facility or sanctioning body, except those governed by specific contracts that supersede this PNWTOA minimum fee schedule. We will be making this document available on our website for everyone’s reference going forward.

This fee schedule is one example, in addition to recruitment, training, grievance resolution, and awards recognition, among others, of how our TOA provides value to its members. This is the time of year when we request that you renew your membership with the dues that permit the PNWTOA to continue operating next year. We would sincerely appreciate your $30 dues payment by the January 1st, 2022 deadline.

There are two ways to pay your dues: by PayPal or mail. For your convenience, you will receive a PayPal invoice shortly. If you choose to use PayPal there is an additional processing charge of $1.59.

Pay by PayPal or Download the membership form (PDF 40KB). Please include payment with your membership application and mail to:

Pacific Northwest Tennis Officials Association
706 122nd St Ct NW
Gig Harbor, Wa 98332

As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach the Board of Directors by replying to this email.

Thank you all for your continued support and dedication,

PNWTOA Board of Directors

From: PNW Tennis Officials <pnwtennisofficials@gmail.com>

Date: Fri, Jul 2, 2021 at 5:16 PM
Subject: Board election + Roving Workshop Update

Hello PNW Tennis Officials!

We have a couple of announcements for you as summer kicks into gear and events/competition continue to become more normal in most of our areas.

First, congratulations to Denise Alexander, Barb Silvey, and Holly Weyhrauch, who will each be returning to serve a new term on the PNWTOA Board of Directors following last month’s election. Complete election results can be found in the attachment to this email. We are so grateful for the ongoing commitment of all three of these dedicated officials, as well as the election participation of 75% of our members in selecting them.

Also, beginning this month, the USTA has reinstated In-person workshops for official training in all disciplines, and one of the first will be a Roving workshop held in Bellevue, WA on Saturday, July 24th. Hopefully you all received the notification email about the workshop directly from the USTA yesterday.

We encourage anyone in reasonable proximity who is a newer official or who has never participated in a Roving workshop to attend. Registration is open from now until July 17th at the USTA Officiating Online Learning Center:
